Savage Republic was a mainstay in the early 1980s Los Angeles art-punk/post-punk scene. Their innovative graphic design by Bruce Licher supported the band's ethos of making haunting and evocative music out of time and place, blending a variety of musical styles from both eastern and western traditions into their own unique vision.
Their eclectic sound is inspired by artists like Brian Eno, Wire, The Buzzcocks, The Fall, Joy Division, Can, and Glenn Branca. Savage Republic has performed with or collaborated with similar like-minded artists including Buzzcocks, Graham Lewis (of Wire), Kommunity FK, Christian Death, Einst - rzende Neubauten, Flipper, David Yow, Camper Van Beethoven, Psi-Com (Perry Farrell), Sonic Youth, members of Big Black, The Minutemen, Fugazi, 100 Flowers, and Red Temple Spirits.
In 2022, Savage Republic released "Meteora", their first full-length album in seven years and some of their best work to date. Self-recorded in a secret cavernous location, their mix of tribal textures, political anthems, and Morricone-esque surf instrumentals explode with sonic fury and again transport the listener to faraway lands at turns both sinister and beautiful. In addition to the world-wide release by Mobilization Recordings, Polish label Gustaff Records released a now sold-out limited lathe-cut vinyl edition and a limited lathe-cut vinyl Ukrainian benefit single that includes an alternate version of the album title track "Meteora" with vocals by Laura Mace (Foo Fighters).
"Meteora" is a powerful modern update to the band's well-defined post-punk ethos.
For the past 13+ years this longest-lasting lineup of Thom Fuhrmann, Ethan Port, Alan Waddington, and Kerry Dowling has infused all the power of their legendary live performances into a cinematic sonic dreamscape.
Ethan Port comments "with Meteora, it feels to me like this lineup has played together for so long that we communicate really efficiently and intuitively, and the band has solidified into something more vital, fresh, and current - both in the studio and in our live performances. I'm really excited to see what else we conjure on the next records."
One of many highlights of "Meteora" is the pandemic inspired piece "Unprecedented" written by Wire's Graham Lewis that is sure to become a staple in their set list. The current line-up is not shy about speaking up and taking a stand, and the vocal tracks "Nothing At All" and "God & Guns" take aim squarely at recent U.S. political events. Arabic-surf tracks "Stingray", "Bizerte Rolls", "Boca del Vaca", and "Newport '86" echo cinematic themes explored on their 1980s "Ceremonial" and "Jamahiriya" albums from fresh perspectives. "Meteora" is a gorgeous and delicate composition skirting 4AD-inspired territory. The album ends with "Ghost Light", a somber and cavernous haunting abstract soundscape.
"Meteora" follows the 10" single "1938/Siam recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago during the Savage Republic 2019 Midwest Trek tour. These two tracks are regulars in the band's live set and capture more of the raw power of their live performances.
Savage Republic is now touring the new album, plus their greatest hits, in California and Europe in 2022 and 2023, and the band is scheduled to record another installment of their "Passport Series" LPs in Poland during the tour. https://savagerepublic.bandcamp.com/ https://post-punk.com/la-post-punk-legends-savage -
